Most humidifiers marketed for a whole room right now are ultrasonic — cheap to build, quiet, and prone to a specific complaint: a white mineral dust that settles on nearby furniture once the water's minerals get atomized straight into the air. Evaporative works differently, and the difference is worth naming plainly rather than treating as a marketing detail: water wicks up through a filter and a fan pushes air through it, so the unit only puts as much moisture into the air as the air can actually hold. It self-regulates and it doesn't leave dust behind, at the cost of a higher price and a filter you'll eventually replace.
