A Christmas Mantel and Tree Built From a Few Good Pieces

A finished-looking mantel and tree come from a handful of pieces in one palette, not a cart full of extras. Six pieces that do the heavy lifting, and how to size them.

The picks (6)

1. The tree-base finish

Best Choice Products 36-Inch Woven Hyacinth Christmas Tree Collar, Chestnut

Hides the stand and cords with a woven collar that sits flat. Read more ↓

A three-piece woven hyacinth collar, 36 inches across and 11.25 inches tall, that clips together around the stand and has a cut-out for the light cord. A collar hides a metal stand more neatly than a skirt that bunches, and it stays tidy when gifts get pulled out on Christmas morning. It holds 4.7 stars across 797 ratings. It comes in 24, 36 and 42-inch sizes; the listing matches them to 4 to 6 foot, 7.5 foot and 9-foot-plus trees, but measure your stand's width before you choose.

2. The one-palette ornament base

Valery Madelyn 30-Count Shatterproof Ball Ornaments, 2.36 inches, Red, Green and Gold

Amazon

Thirty ornaments in one color story, so the tree reads as planned. Read more ↓

Thirty 2.36-inch shatterproof balls in red, green and gold, in a mix of shiny, matte, glitter and painted plaid and holly finishes. One coordinated set is what makes a tree look planned instead of collected, and the mixed finishes keep it from looking flat. It holds 4.6 stars across 1,009 ratings. Thirty is a base layer for a 6 to 7 foot tree; a bigger tree will want a second set or a few larger ornaments mixed in.

3. The finished-top piece

Kurt Adler 10-Light 6-Point Capiz Star Tree Topper with Scroll Design

Amazon

A 10-inch lit capiz star that glows warm at the top. Read more ↓

A 10-inch, six-point star of capiz shell with a scroll pattern, lit from inside by 10 mini bulbs, with four spare bulbs and two fuses in the box. The topper is what the eye goes to first, and a lit one finishes the tree even before the rest of the lights go on. It holds 4.4 stars across 3,085 ratings. It plugs in, so plan to run its cord down the trunk into the same power strip as the tree lights.

4. The matching mantel set

Fesciory Cable Knit Christmas Stockings, 18 inches, 4 Pack, Burgundy and Ivory

Amazon

Shop on Amazon
Four matching cable-knit stockings for the whole household. Read more ↓

Four cable-knit stockings, each 18 inches long and about 5 inches wide, in burgundy and ivory. A matching set is the single biggest upgrade to a mantel that has collected one-off stockings over the years, and 18 inches is long enough to read from across the room without covering the fireplace opening. They hold 4.4 stars across 2,526 ratings. Knit stretches when it's full, so expect them to hang a little longer by Christmas morning.

5. The no-tipping stocking hanger

Haute Decor The Original MantleClip Stocking Holder, 4 Pack

Amazon

Clips to the mantel edge instead of balancing a weight on top. Read more ↓

A low-profile clip that grips the mantel ledge, up to 3 inches thick, with clear pads that protect the finish, and holds a stocking up to 10 pounds. Weighted holders take up mantel space and can be pulled off by a tug on a full stocking; these sit almost out of sight so the garland and candles get the room. They hold 4.7 stars across 9,496 ratings. Measure your mantel ledge first: anything thicker than 3 inches won't fit.

6. The mantel candlelight

Vinkor Flameless Real-Wax Pillar Candles, Set of 9, Ivory, 4 to 9 inches, with Remote and Timer

Amazon

Shop on Amazon
Pillars in graduated heights that flicker on a timer, no flame near the garland. Read more ↓

A set of nine ivory real-wax LED pillars in graduated heights from 4 to 9 inches, with a remote and a 24-hour cycling timer, so they come on at dusk without anyone remembering. Graduated heights are what make a mantel look arranged, and flameless means they can sit right in the greenery. They hold 4.5 stars across 24,930 ratings. Check the listing for battery type before you wrap them, so you can tuck spares in.

Why we picked these

Most mantels and trees look busy because they were built a few pieces at a time over years, in five different color stories. The fix is to choose one palette and a few pieces that each do a big job: something at the base of the tree, one ornament set that repeats, something at the top, and on the mantel, stockings that hang right, plus candlelight. Red, green and gold is the classic; ivory and green or all-neutral work just as well, as long as everything agrees.

Size each piece to the room. A tree collar should be a few inches wider than the stand, and the stand's footprint is printed on its box; the collar below is sized at 36 inches for a 7.5 foot tree or a stand up to about 35 inches wide. Ornaments in the 2 to 2.5 inch range fill a tree without looking like a store display, and 30 of them cover a 6 to 7 foot tree as a base layer you can add to. Stockings at 18 inches long read well on a standard mantel without hiding the firebox.

This list deliberately skips the wreath, string lights and garland; those are in our Christmas decor worth setting up early post, and the pieces below are built to sit alongside them. If the fireplace itself needs a screen or tools before it gets decorated, see our fireplace essentials guide.
